The book of Daniel tells the story of a certain Jewish man named Daniel and his companions Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah (later known as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego) who were taken to Babylon “in the third year of the reign of King Jehoiakim of Judah” (1:1; roughly 605 BC, see below).
